Is Johnny Depp preparing to reprise drug smuggler George Jung in Blow 2?

Why Blow 2 Could Happen (Kind Of)

The internet has been ablaze with discussions about Blow 2, fueled by fan-made posters and false claims of a 2025 release. Despite the excitement, there is no official confirmation that Blow 2 is in development. However, a follow-up project based on George Jung’s life was once on the horizon.

The original Blow (2001) was based on Bruce Porter’s 1993 novel Blow: How a Small-Town Boy Made $100 Million with the Medellín Cocaine Cartel and Lost It All. While the movie covered much of Jung’s life, many of his experiences from the 1980s drug trade were left untold.

Jung detailed these untold stories in his book Heavy, which he wrote during his 20-year prison sentence. The book dives deeper into his smuggling days and introduces familiar faces from the Blow narrative.

The Almost-Sequel: Heavy

In 2015, CBS News reported that Akula Films was planning a movie adaptation of Heavy, with Jung co-writing the screenplay alongside T. Rafael Cimino. Actors Denis Leary (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook) were reportedly attached to star.

However, nearly a decade later, the project seems to have stalled with no updates, leaving fans to wonder if the film will ever materialize. Notably, Heavy would not have been a direct Blow sequel, as it appeared that Leary, rather than Depp, would portray Jung. In 2021, following Jung’s passing, Leary paid tribute on X (formerly Twitter), saying:

“The man himself was far more magic than the myth. Truly one of a kind. RIP George Jung. AKA Boston George #ForeverJung”

Could Depp Still Return for Blow 2?

Despite the uncertain fate of Heavy, fans continue to hope for Johnny Depp’s return as George Jung. Depp’s performance in the original film is considered one of his finest dramatic roles.

Moreover, Depp seems to be on the brink of another major comeback. Reports suggest that Disney wants him back for Pirates of the Caribbean 6, reprising his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow following his high-profile legal battle with Amber Heard.

What Happened to George Jung After Blow?

Blow ended with Jung (Depp) imagining a bittersweet visit from his estranged daughter Kristina, portrayed by Emma Roberts. In real life, Jung was released from prison in 2014 and, according to reports, did eventually reconcile with Kristina.

Jung shared a heartwarming moment on X (formerly Twitter) in 2016, posting a photo with his daughter captioned:

“Can’t live without my heart”

Sadly, George Jung, known as “Boston George,” passed away on May 5, 2021, due to liver and kidney failure. He was 78 years old.
