A Different World Is Back: Netflix Returns to Hillman College This September

Class is officially back in session.
Nearly four decades after A Different World first introduced audiences to the vibrant halls of Hillman College, Netflix is bringing the beloved franchise back with a sequel series that promises to honor its legacy while speaking to a new generation. The highly anticipated revival premieres on September 24, 2026—exactly 39 years after the original series debuted on NBC.
At the center of this new chapter is Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon (Hell’s Kitchen). Deborah is the youngest daughter of fan-favorite couple Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, portrayed once again by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy.
The first teaser trailer offers a nostalgic welcome back to Hillman. Wearing a Hillman varsity jacket, Moon softly hums the opening notes of the original show’s iconic theme song—a simple but powerful reminder that while times have changed, the spirit of Hillman remains very much alive.

A New Generation Finds Its Voice
The sequel follows Deborah as she begins her freshman year at Hillman College, a fictional Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Although she’s determined to forge her own identity, escaping the shadow of her legendary parents proves easier said than done.
According to Netflix, Deborah is a “free-spirited, well-intentioned, yet rebellious” young woman who embarks on a journey of self-discovery while experiencing all the excitement, challenges, friendships, and romances that define college life.
The 10-episode first season will explore the lives of Hillman’s newest students, tackling contemporary issues while preserving the warmth, humor, and social consciousness that made the original series a cultural landmark.
Joining Moon in the new ensemble cast are:
- Alijah Kai Haggins as Rashida
- Chibuikem Uche as Kojo
- Cornell Young IV as Shaquille
- Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir
- Kennedi Reece as Hazel

Additional cast members include:

The Return of Hillman’s Legends
For longtime fans, the revival offers much more than nostalgia.
Several original cast members are returning to reprise their iconic roles, including:
- Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert
- Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne
- Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson
- Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks
- Ajai Sanders as Gina Deveaux

Their return bridges the gap between generations, creating a continuation rather than simply a reboot.

Debbie Allen Leads the Way Home
One of the most exciting aspects of the sequel is the involvement of Debbie Allen, whose creative vision helped transform the original series into one of television’s most influential portrayals of Black college life.
Allen returns as executive producer and will direct three episodes, including the premiere.
“There couldn’t be a better time than now to reboot A Different World,” Allen said. “Our show changed lives, tripled the enrollment of historically Black colleges and gave a strong voice and platform for Young Black America.”
Her statement reflects the enduring cultural significance of the original series, which aired from 1987 to 1993 and remains widely celebrated for its authentic depiction of HBCU experiences, social issues, and Black excellence.

Behind the Scenes: Familiar Creators Return
The sequel is helmed by Felicia Pride (Grey’s Anatomy, Bel-Air), who serves as showrunner and executive producer.
“It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life,” Pride shared. “I am so proud of the work we’re doing to reimagine A Different World for beloved fans and new generations alike.”
The creative team also includes original series writers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood, who return as executive producers alongside Mandy Summers and veteran television producer Tom Werner.
The Bythewoods described their return to Hillman as deeply personal:
“A Different World changed everything for us. It was where we got our start as writers and where we found each other. This show has always been a part of our love story.”

Why This Revival Matters
When A Different World premiered, it became much more than a sitcom. It introduced millions of viewers to the richness of HBCU culture and tackled topics ranging from racism and class differences to HIV awareness, domestic violence, and identity.
The show’s impact extended beyond entertainment. Debbie Allen has frequently noted that the series contributed to a significant rise in HBCU enrollment during its original run.
Today, as conversations surrounding representation, education, and community continue to evolve, Hillman College feels more relevant than ever.
The new series arrives at a time when audiences are increasingly seeking stories that celebrate diverse experiences while offering hope, humor, and authenticity.

Mark Your Calendars
Netflix announced the premiere date during its Celebration of Black Television event at the American Black Film Festival. The decision to launch the series on September 24, 2026 is especially meaningful, commemorating the exact anniversary of the original show’s debut. Recent reports suggest the streamer intentionally chose the date to honor the franchise’s legacy while introducing Hillman to a whole new generation of viewers.
Whether you’re a longtime fan who remembers Whitley’s unforgettable “Relax, relate, release” moments or someone preparing for your first visit to Hillman College, one thing is certain:
