Villagers in Sri Lanka release GIANT crocodile back into the river after rescuing the one-ton reptile when it became stranded in a canal

Villagers in Sri Lanka recently embarked on a remarkable rescue mission when they encountered a massive predicament involving a stranded, giant crocodile. Measuring an astounding 17 feet in length and weighing close to a ton, this colossal reptile became trapped in a canal located in the southern city of Matara.

The crocodile’s misadventure began when it ventured into the canal, likely in search of food. Unfortunately, due to heavy rainfall, the water levels rose, leaving the immense creature marooned in its watery confinement. The stranded reptile posed a significant challenge, as its sheer size rendered it incapable of freeing itself.

Word of the stranded crocodile quickly spread, attracting the attention of concerned wildlife officials and local villagers. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, they banded together to devise a plan to rescue the magnificent creature and return it to its natural habitat.

Environmental activist Uppala Jayatissa explained, “We found a similar-sized crocodile four or five months ago in the Polathumodrara river. This is the maximum size these types of crocodiles can grow.” It was evident that this was an extraordinary and rare occurrence, further underscoring the significance of the rescue mission.

With the cooperation of the villagers and the assistance of local law enforcement, the rescue operation unfolded smoothly. The wildlife department official, Ravindra Kumar, expressed their determination to ensure the crocodile’s safe return without causing any harm, stating, “We achieved what we wanted, which was to send the crocodile back to where it came from without hurting it in any way.”

The rescue team enlisted the help of a JCB digger and a tractor with a trailer to push the gigantic reptile back into the river. Working in unison, they carefully maneuvered the trapped crocodile, employing caution and precision to ensure its safety during the process. After considerable effort, the resilient reptile was successfully freed from its temporary confinement and gently returned to the flowing waters of the Nilawala River.
