In 2015, Eli’s father humorously expressed his hope that his son wouldn’t inherit his own appearance, but a solemn realization soon replaced the light-hearted banter. Eli’s mother, Bradi McGlathery, sensed that something was amiss almost immediately.
“I moved back and said, ‘Something’s wrong!'” she recounted. The doctor assured her that Eli was in perfect health, but it was then that she hurriedly exclaimed, “He lacks a nose!”
Eli Thompson’s entrance into the world was marked by a rare condition known as congenital arhinia, where the nasal passages, nostrils, or sinuses fail to develop. Despite its rarity, Eli’s journey was marked by resilience and a remarkable spirit.
On March 4th, in a hospital in Mobile, Alabama, Eli astounded the medical team by demonstrating his ability to breathe through his lips, defying the odds set by his condition. McGlathery noted that his lack of a traditional nose “didn’t bother him at all.”
Eli spent five days in the neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s & Women’s Hospital, undergoing a tracheotomy to aid his breathing. Throughout this journey, the medical staff at the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House went above and beyond to provide exceptional care, forging a special bond with Eli and his family.
“We think he’s great just the way he is,” McGlathery stated, gazing at her slumbering son’s crib. Each day brought new challenges, met with a steadfast resolve to take life as it came.
Eli’s path to surgical reconstruction of his nasal passages lies ahead, but his mother shared that he will need to complete puberty before those procedures can begin. She expressed a resolute decision to refrain from unnecessary cosmetic surgeries until that time arrives
Tragically, Eli’s journey on this earthly plane came to an end at the tender age of two. His father, Jeremy Finch, shared the heart-wrenching news on Facebook, stating, “We lost our little friend last night.” Despite the pain of his loss, Finch also acknowledged the blessings Eli brought into their lives: “He completed his sentence much earlier than expected, but it was God’s time to bring him home.”
In response to Finch’s post, thousands of Facebook users expressed their condolences, offering words of comfort and support to Eli’s grieving family.
