Tulips and Purple Hyacinth. The art of folding shells and glass

In 2022, an incredible work of art emerged on Northam Burrows beach. Using only shells and glass fragments found on the shoreline, an artist created three stunning pieces titled “Butterfly,” “Camellia,” and “Hyacinth.” Each artwork was delicately crafted, using the natural shapes and colors of the shells to bring the forms to life.

The “Butterfly” piece was particularly striking, with its intricate wingspan and colorful pattern. The artist had used small pieces of pink and white shells to create the butterfly’s body, with larger shells forming the wings. Blue and green glass fragments had been added to the piece, shimmering in the sunlight like jewels.

“Camellia” and “Hyacinth” were just as impressive, with the former featuring layers of pink and white petals and the latter displaying a bold, purple bloom. The pieces had been arranged with such care that they almost appeared to be growing out of the sand itself.

It was clear that the artist had a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of the beach and its surroundings, and this was reflected in the choice of materials used. By using only shells and glass fragments found on the beach, the artist had created a work of art that felt entirely at home in its environment.

In March of 2023, the artist returned to Northam Burrows beach to create a new piece. This time, they focused on the vibrant colors of tulips and purple hyacinths. The resulting artwork was just as breathtaking as the previous pieces, with rows of red, yellow, and pink tulips set against a backdrop of deep purple hyacinths.

As the tide began to roll in, the artist stepped back to admire their work. For a few moments, the artwork sat in harmony with the ocean, the shells and glass fragments glinting in the light. And then, as the waves swept in, the artwork was reclaimed by the sea, returning to the natural environment from which it had been created.

This temporary nature of the artwork only adds to its beauty and significance. It reminds us that art and nature are constantly in a state of flux, and that we should appreciate the fleeting moments of beauty that we encounter in our lives. The Northam Burrows beach artworks are a testament to the creativity and skill of the artist, and a celebration of the beauty of the natural world.
