“The Enigmatic Black Behemoths Governing Our Galaxy”
Scientists are striving to unravel the origins, development, and immense power of black holes, which are among the most potent yet challenging-to-detect entities in our universe.
Just last year, astronomers finally managed to reveal the initial images of the supermassive black hole located at the center of our Milky Way galaxy. However, the black hole itself remained invisible, not directly observable, due to its incredible density, which prevents even light from escaping its gravitational pull.
Nevertheless, the image of Sagittarius A, our galaxy’s known black hole, unveiled a luminous halo of gas surrounding the object—a realization that it possesses a mass a million times greater than our Sun.
Recent discoveries of this nature, along with numerous others, have left astronomers astounded.
“In the past few years, everything we thought we knew about black holes now comes with a question mark,” remarked Professor Michela Mapelli, an astrophysicist at the University of Padua in Italy.
While most people are familiar with the concept of black holes, only a few recognize the extent to which these peculiar entities continue to perplex astronomers.
One black hole captured the attention of astronomers when it tore apart and consumed a star that had ventured too close last year. Another was characterized as the fastest-growing black hole ever observed, devouring the equivalent mass of one Earth every second. As a result, it is already three billion times more massive than our Sun.
