A significant development occurred in October 2014 when it was announced that the Williams International FJ44-4M turbofan engine had been selected to power the aircraft. This engine choice, developed in collaboration with Honeywell and Pratt & Whitney, marked a milestone in the M-345’s journey. Aermacchi also committed to integrating the 3,400lb-thrust FJ44-4M into its flight-test aircraft, effectively replacing the existing P&W Canada JT15D units. The maiden flight of the M-345 took place on December 29, 2016.

Further progress was made in January 2017 when the first order for the type was placed by the Italian Air Force. Notably, the M-345 was selected for secondary close air support roles, equipped to deploy various munitions such as IR air-to-air missiles, guided bombs, rockets, and 500lb-class bombs.

The M-345’s life-cycle costs are minimized through diligent design and low-level maintenance. It benefits from state-of-the-art maintenance solutions, notably the Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS), which significantly reduces the most expensive maintenance activities.
