Squadron Conquers Afghan Weather and Terrain
Operating in Afghanistan presents numerous challenges due to the rugged terrain and severe weather conditions. However, the Nomads of Company G, 104th Aviation Regiment, comprising nearly 200 soldiers from the Connecticut and Pennsylvania National Guard, have successfully navigated these obstacles since their mobilization for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Despite facing a last-minute shift from Kuwait’s rolling deserts to Afghanistan’s mountainous regions, the squadron has accomplished remarkable feats during their 10-month deployment.
Helicopters serve as the primary mode of transportation for military forces in Afghanistan. Despite the difficulties posed by the country’s terrain and weather, the Nomads have proven themselves as resilient soldiers with reliable aircraft. Their fleet includes 14 CH-47D Chinook helicopters, which have played a crucial role in the squadron’s operations.
The Nomads’ deployment in Afghanistan has been marked by numerous challenges. One significant obstacle was the abrupt change in deployment location, requiring them to adapt swiftly from the deserts of Kuwait to the mountainous deserts of Afghanistan. Despite this challenge, the squadron has effectively completed their mission, and they are now in their final weeks before handing over their helicopters to pilots from the Georgia and Alabama National Guard.
Throughout their service, the Nomads have achieved impressive milestones. They have transported over 25,000 passengers, ranging from journalists with video cameras to Afghan National Army soldiers equipped with rocket-propelled grenades. Additionally, the squadron has transported millions of pounds of cargo, either internally within the aircraft or by slinging it below, connecting major bases to remote outposts that lack proper helicopter landing sites.
The Nomads’ accomplishments are even more remarkable considering their flawless safety record. Despite operating for more than 4,600 hours, the squadron has not encountered any major mishaps or personnel injuries. This highlights the professionalism and expertise of the Nomads in navigating the challenging Afghan environment.
