Koko the Gorilla, Who Knew Sign Language and Was Friends with Mr. Rogers, Passes Away at Age 46

Most people have heard of Koko, the gorilla who could speak about 1000 words in Sign Language, and understand about 2000 in English. What most people don’t know, however, is that Koko was an avid Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood fan. When Fred Rogers took a trip out to meet Koko for his show, not only did she immediately wrap her arms around him and embrace him, she did what she’d always seen him do onscreen: she proceeded to take his shoes off.

Koko, the beloved gorilla who captured the hearts of millions around the world for her ability to communicate using sign language, has passed away at the age of 46.

Koko was born in San Francisco Zoo in 1971 and was later moved to the Gorilla Foundation in California where she was taught sign language by Dr. Francine Patterson. Koko quickly became a sensation for her ability to communicate using American Sign Language, and she was known for her gentle demeanor and intelligence.

In addition to her impressive signing abilities, Koko also had a special friendship with the late Fred Rogers, better known as Mr. Rogers. Koko and Mr. Rogers met in 1998 when he visited her at the Gorilla Foundation. The two quickly bonded over their shared love for kindness and compassion.

Koko’s legacy extends far beyond her ability to sign and her friendship with Mr. Rogers. She was a symbol of hope and an inspiration to many. Koko helped to break down barriers and change the way we think about animals, particularly primates, and their capacity for intelligence and emotion.

While Koko may be gone, her legacy lives on. She will always be remembered as a gentle and intelligent creature who touched the hearts of many. Rest in peace, Koko.
