Giant snakes are not uncommon, but how big is the biggest one ever recorded, do you know?

Weighing nearly half a ton, measuring 9.7 meters long, and with a body diameter of 1 meter, this is the largest insect ever recorded on Earth.

When it comes to the “biggest” snake in the world, many people immediately think of the Medusa python, weighing 136 kg and measuring 7.6 meters long, which was recognized by the Guinness World Records in 2013 and is currently being cared for in Kansas City, Missouri, United States.

However, in 2016, workers in the Belo Monte dam area in Brazil discovered a gigantic snake weighing nearly half a ton, with a total length from head to tail of 9.7 meters and a body diameter of 1 meter.

The workers used chains and cranes to lift the creature off the ground, revealing the belly of the snake with yellow spots.

According to experts’ assessments, this massive creature is an Anaconda snake – the largest and most ferocious snake on the planet.

With this discovery, it is highly likely that this will be the largest snake in the world, as its body size exceeds that of the Medusa python.

The Anaconda belongs to the genus of giant snakes, commonly inhabiting the Amazon river basin. They prefer to live in water or hide in swamps, rivers, and caves in the dense forests of South America.

With their massive body weighing 750 kg, measuring over 10 meters in length, and having a body circumference of up to 1.2 meters, coupled with their fierce nature and excellent stealth skills, Anacondas have become formidable silent killers.

Perhaps it is due to their killer instincts – devouring prey without hesitation – that this giant snake is called by many different names.

There are records stating that this giant creature is called “Henakanday” in Sinhala, meaning “thunder snake.”

Or it is also mentioned that it originates from the word “Anaikondran,” which means “elephant killer.” Despite the various names, they all indicate the massive size and ferocity of this snake species.

Although they move somewhat slowly, they possess extraordinary strength. With strong and sharp teeth, this snake can overpower and swallow large and robust animals such as deer, jaguars, and even cows, hippos, crocodiles… with ease.

Despite being aquatic, they can observe their prey accurately before launching an attack.

They slowly coil their body around the prey, constricting tightly until it dies, and then gradually swallow the entire prey. The caimans in the Amazon River are perhaps the most favored delicacy of Anacondas.

Due to their slow digestion, after consuming meat, Anacondas can go without food for an extended period until they find new prey.

Not only do they have a taste for caiman meat, but humans have also become tasty morsels for these ferocious snakes. Therefore, Anacondas are considered the largest and most vicious snakes on the planet by people in South America.

The term “trăn” is a common name in Vietnam, used to refer to several large snake species, mainly belonging to the Boidae family (South American boas), Loxocemidae (Mexican boas), and Pythonidae (pythons).

They share the common characteristic of hunting warm-blooded animals by biting and constricting them before slowly swallowing them whole.
