This can be called a once-in-a-century battle. Reptiles have existed on our planet for about 300 million years. Today, many reptile species still exist, such as snakes, pythons, lizards, and crocodiles.

In a recent study published in the journal Nature, a group of international wildlife conservationists has raised concerns about a worrisome situation in their work. It turns out that about 1/5 of reptile species, including crocodiles and snakes, are being abandoned by wildlife conservation programs to the extent that they are facing extinction.

The reason is that very few people care about these reptile species. They are either considered ugly or known for their biting behavior, which doesn’t garner public sympathy.

As a result, more than 1,800 species have ended up on the endangered list, and 31 species have vanished permanently. Scientists suspect that there may have been reptile species, including snakes and crocodiles, that went extinct even before humans discovered them.

Although the data indicates the critical condition of these reptile species, in the wild, they often engage in self-destructive behavior, including cannibalism. The life-and-death battle between a formidable crocodile and one of the world’s most dangerous snakes was captured on camera.

The white object that Rishani spotted from a distance turned out to be a Russell’s Pit Viper snake.

Rishani Gunasinghe, a technology expert, was chosen to witness the entire incident during her trip to Yala National Park in Sri Lanka.

That day, Rishani’s group of tourists came across a small pond while traveling. Despite being warned that this area was difficult to navigate, most of the Jeep vehicles ignored it and continued on. However, because they knew it was the home of a crocodile, the group of tourists decided to venture in.

Suddenly, Rishani spotted a small moving white object. This object caught everyone’s attention, and they approached to investigate.

Despite being the aggressor, the crocodile faced numerous challenges.

Soon after, a large crocodile emerged from beneath the water, snatched the white object into its mouth, revealing a Russell’s Pit Viper snake.

According to scientists, the Russell’s Pit Viper is known as one of the “Four Deadly Venomous Creatures,” responsible for thousands of deaths each year in Southeast Asia and causing many survivors to experience body deformities, regressing from adults to children.

Each attack injects 40-70 mg of venom, turning the victim’s blood into a thick gel-like substance. This venom causes death, and if lucky enough to survive, the victim reverts to a childlike state.

The intense clashes and retaliation between the two reptiles were extremely captivating.

Seeing the venomous snake, Rishani was extremely thrilled. She said, “Seeing a Russell’s Pit Viper in the wild is truly fascinating. However, witnessing the largest crocodile ever seen was unbelievable. The crocodile’s twists, turns, and attempts to subdue its opponent were incredibly impressive. This is undoubtedly a performance that can only be seen once in a lifetime.”
