Courageous Labrador Retriever Defends Family by Confronting Mountain Lion to Protect Two Children

KSLTV News reported a remarkable incident on July 19 that unfolded in Cedar Hills, Utah, where a courageous Labrador dog became a true hero by defending its family from a mountain lion. Despite sustaining serious injuries, the dog’s bravery ensured that it survived to live another day.

The protagonist of this heartwarming tale is Ella, a 7-year-old yellow Lab, who spotted a lurking mountain lion while Crystal Michaelis and her children were enjoying some outdoor playtime. Although Michaelis didn’t initially notice the predator, she became aware of Ella’s peculiar behavior. The loyal dog was vigilantly observing both the children and the area where the mountain lion was concealed.

Responding promptly, Michaelis ushered her children inside. As they retreated to the safety of their home, they observed Ella’s injuries—a testament to her fierce struggle. The injuries were evident on her head, face, legs, tongue, and neck, and she was covered in blood when they brought her inside. Michaelis recounted the scene, stating, “There was blood all over the door and the terrace.”

The remarkable aspect of this encounter was that the family was not present during the confrontation itself. Nevertheless, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources discovered traces of mountain lion tracks leading to the vicinity. Wildlife experts hypothesized that the mountain lion might have ventured close to the Michaelis’ residence due to its distraction by goats in a neighboring yard.

Despite the absence of recent mountain lion sightings, the Utah DWR issued a cautionary message urging residents to remain vigilant and exercise caution. Faith Jolley, a DWR public relations officer, explained that cougars usually follow deer, as they are a primary source of sustenance for these predators. “Deer have also been spotted in this area,” Jolley added.

Ella bore the brunt of the mountain lion’s aggression, enduring approximately 30 bites that were concentrated around her shoulders and extended downwards. Michaelis emphasized the significance of Ella’s unyielding determination, noting that the bites indicated her unwavering commitment to protecting her family. Despite the injuries sustained, Ella is on the road to recovery and is expected to regain her health.
