Baby red headed woodpecker

In early 2015, a stunning photograph captured a baby weasel riding a woodpecker in mid-flight. The picture quickly went viral, captivating audiences around the world with its unlikely and adorable display of interspecies playfulness. The image, taken by amateur photographer Martin Le-May, became a symbol of the curious and surprising moments that can occur in the natural world.

At first glance, the photograph may seem comical or even fake. But it is a genuine depiction of a baby weasel, also known as a stoat, hitching a ride on the back of a green woodpecker. The two animals were flying through Hornchurch Country Park, in London, England, when Le-May spotted them and snapped the now-famous picture.

According to Le-May, the weasel had likely been hunting for small rodents in the park when it caught sight of the woodpecker. The weasel chased the bird across the ground and then into the air, latching onto its back as they soared upward. Despite the weasel’s apparent aggression, the woodpecker did not seem to be in distress and managed to keep flying for a few seconds before the weasel eventually jumped off.

Experts believe that the weasel was not trying to attack the woodpecker, but rather engaging in a form of play. Like many young animals, weasels are known for their playful behavior, which helps them develop the skills they need for hunting and survival. Riding on the back of a bird may seem like an unusual game, but for a curious and adventurous baby weasel, it could have been an exciting and challenging way to test its abilities.

The photograph of the baby weasel and woodpecker quickly became a sensation on social media, with thousands of people sharing and commenting on the image. Many praised the unlikely pair for their ingenuity and resilience, while others simply marveled at the beauty of the moment captured in the photograph.

The image of the baby weasel riding a woodpecker is a reminder of the incredible diversity and complexity of the natural world. It shows that even in the most unexpected places and situations, animals can find ways to connect, play, and learn from one another. As humans, we can learn a lot from the example of these two creatures, who, for a brief moment, shared a remarkable and unforgettable experience in the sky.
