A Shark Swimming In A Heart-Shaped School Of Salmon Wins The 2020 Drone Photography Contest
The 2020 Drone Photography Awards received an impressive collection of aerial shots, including a chance photograph of a heart-
shaped school of salmon. The photograph, taken by Australian photographer Jim Picôt, is noteworthy because a shark swims near
the center, chasing one of the fish. Heron roosts nestled in the treetops and a group of swimmers floating between crashing waves
are also prized shots.
The contest, hosted by the Siena Awards Festival, received entries from photographers from 126 countries, and an exhibition titled
Above Us Only Sky will showcase the top images from October 24 to November 29 in Siena. Check out some of our favorites below,

“Gray Whale Plays Tourist Pushing” by Joseph Cheires. “At the end of the gray whale season, I was told about a gray whale that had
been playing with boats for the last three years, gently pushing them. So we went back a year later, and the gray whale appeared,
and this is the result.”

Dmitrii Viliunov’s “Where Herons Live” is a work of art. “Many people believe that herons build their nests in reeds or in swamps.
In fact, they nest in the tops of massive trees, and a drone can sometimes see them.”
“Phoenix Rising,” written by Paul Hoelen. “The phoenix rising is a symbol of rebirth from the ashes of a fire. This is represented by
the start of an actual regeneration process at the industrial mining site of Lake Owens. After a destructive past and the creation of
America’s most toxic dustbowl, migratory birds are returning, and life is starting over…”
Alessandra Meniconzi’s “Frozen Land”. “Winters in the Eurasian steppe can be brutal, with temperatures as low as -30°C. But life goes on,
and locals use sledges to travel from village to village, crossing icy rivers and lakes.”
“Black Flag” is a song written by Tomer Appelbaum. “On April 19, 2020, thousands of Israelis maintain social distance due to Covid-19
restrictions while protesting against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Rabin Square.”
