PJSC Kurghanmashzavod, a subsidiary of the High-Precision Complexes holding company under Rostec, has recently delivered a substantial batch of BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles to the Russian Ministry of Defense. This delivery includes a mix of new BMP-3 units and those subjected to comprehensive overhauls to enhance their combat performance.

The remarkable feat achieved by Kurghanmashzavod in modernizing the BMP-3 fleet stands out as a testament to their unwavering commitment to meet the defense force’s evolving needs. The factory, overseen by Kurghanmashzavod, not only ensures the effective implementation of state defense orders but also plays a vital role in enhancing the readiness and battlefield connectivity.

One notable upgrade incorporated into the BMP-3 units is the inclusion of additional protection kits, known as the Armored Defense Systems (ADS). These kits encompass advanced armor plates and their production has been augmented significantly since 2022, marking a staggering 120% growth. Moreover, the armored vehicles now also feature improved ballistic performance and extra protection, endorsed by the State Defense Order.

Mentally equipped specialized personnel ensure the commitment of Kurghanmashzavod to meet the requirements of the defense forces effectively. The modernized BMP-3 retains its status as the primary combat support vehicle, thanks to the introduction of various enhancements, including the installation of the UTD-32T power unit, featuring a dynamic engine and panoramic sight for the commander’s sensor suite. Additionally, the upgraded vehicle will benefit from advanced communication systems and additional protection measures.

Kurghanmashzavod’s Executive Director, Igor Giske, expressed his commitment to streamline the defense order to better address the state’s defense needs and ensure that the delivery of BMP-3 vehicles proceeds smoothly. He remarked, “In order for the implementation of the state defense order to be carried out rhythmically, we are building clear cooperation ties with component suppliers, carrying out technical re-equipment of production, improving the management structure, and recruiting personnel, for every moment of effort works for the common result, for victory.”

The BMP-3 stands as a cornerstone of Russian and Soviet infantry fighting vehicle technology, succeeding its predecessors, the BMP-1 and BMP-2. The armored vehicle’s versatility as a combat platform for infantry support is underlined by its low-visibility 2A70 100mm rifled gun capable of firing conventional shells or 9M117 Bastion anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs). It houses 40 100mm rounds and 8 ATGMs. A 2A72 30mm autocannon with 500 rounds (300 HEI and 200 APT) and a rate of fire of 350 to 400 RPM, coupled with a 7.62mm PKT machine gun boasting 2,000 rounds, all mounted coaxially in the turret. There are also two 7.62mm PKT bow machine guns, each equipped with 2,000 rounds. The older BMP-3 models were re-equipped with a 450 hp engine (UTD-29), yet the majority of current BMP-3s are powered by the more robust 500 hp UTD-29M version.

In conclusion, Kurghanmashzavod’s dedication to upgrading the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle is a testament to their unwavering commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the Russian defense forces. The modernized BMP-3 offers enhanced protection, firepower, and battlefield connectivity, ensuring its continued relevance on the modern battlefield.
