Revitalizing AH-64D Apache Attack Helicopters: A Modernization Journey for Next-Generation U.S. Army Aircraft

The U.S. Army to Retrofit Aging AH-64D Apache Attack Helicopters

In a recent announcement posted on the U.S. government’s procurement website, it has been revealed that the U.S. Army is preparing to retrofit its aging AH-64D Apache attack helicopters to pave the way for newer aircraft.

The Army Contracting Command-Redstone Arsenal (ACC-RSA) has initiated a search for contractors who can determine the essential requirements of the reimagined helicopter fleet within the AH-64D configuration.

According to the notice, “The United States Government (USG) Army Contracting Command-Redstone Arsenal (ACC-RSA) is conducting market research to determine potential sources for the reconfiguration of the Apache AH-64D for the Project Manager for Apache Attack Helicopter (PM AAH) within the Program Executive Office for Aviation (PEO AVN). The USG seeks to identify potential sources that possess the expertise, capabilities, and experience to meet the requirements necessary to develop the Apache AH-64D attack helicopter, sourced directly to the Government.”

The Apache Project Office is actively seeking innovative partnerships to provide plans, procedures, production information, and reports addressing the reconfiguration of 3-7 AH-64D aircraft per month. Additionally, this effort will include minor repairs to maximize component reuse in the production of the Apache AH-64E.

The performance period for this procurement process is from January 2022 through December 2027, with the initial delivery scheduled for June 2023 and the final delivery scheduled for March 2027.

The battle-proven AH-64 Apache is the Army’s premier attack helicopter, renowned for its ability to engage and destroy armored vehicles, personnel, and material targets even in challenging battlefield conditions.

Currently, the Army’s aviation fleet comprises both AH-64D Longbow Apaches and AH-64E models. The Apache helicopters are deployed to both active Army units and Army National Guard armories, playing a crucial role in surveillance operations and cavalry units, providing a crucial role in support of operational reconnaissance battalions and cavalry units, performing a critical role in supporting Brigade Combat Team reconnaissance and cavalry missions.
