Pierce Brosnan Addresses Potential James Bond Return
Table Of Contents
James Bond has been a staple of popular culture for over six decades. The legendary British spy first appeared on screen in 1962’s Dr. No, portrayed by Sean Connery. Over the years, several actors have taken up the iconic role, including George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and most recently, Daniel Craig.
Brosnan’s tenure as 007 began with GoldenEye (1995), a critically acclaimed and commercially successful film that grossed over $356 million worldwide. His portrayal of Bond continued with Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999), and Die Another Day (2002). However, while his first outing was highly praised, his final film received mixed reviews, leading to his departure from the franchise.
Brosnan Reacts to Potential 007 Return
Having left the role 23 years ago, Brosnan recently addressed speculation about a possible return to the Bond franchise. After the lukewarm reception to Die Another Day, Brosnan stepped away from the series in 2002, making way for Daniel Craig’s debut in Casino Royale (2006). Craig went on to star in five Bond films, concluding his run with No Time To Die (2021). With Amazon now in control of the franchise, James Bond 26 has been confirmed, and some fans have suggested that Brosnan reprise his role as an older 007.
In an interview with GQ, Brosnan was asked whether he was aware of the calls for his return and if he would consider playing Bond again. While the 71-year-old actor acknowledged his interest, he also admitted that he believes it’s time for new talent to take over:
“I’ve heard of that. Of course, how could I not be interested? But it’s a delicate situation now. I think it’s best to let sleeping dogs lie, really. I think so. It’s a rather romantic notion and idea, but I think everything changes, everything falls apart. I think that it’s best left to another man, really. Fresh blood.”
What Brosnan’s Interest Means for James Bond 26
With Amazon’s acquisition of MGM in 2022, the company now holds full creative control over the Bond franchise. Longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson reportedly made little progress on developing a new film before Amazon took over. As a result, Amazon is expected to move quickly to bring Bond back to the big screen, which includes selecting a new lead actor.
Given Amazon’s desire to modernize and expand the franchise, it remains uncertain whether Brosnan could return. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos recently conducted a poll on X (formerly Twitter) to gauge fan interest in potential 007 candidates, with Henry Cavill emerging as a popular choice. That said, with Amazon’s apparent interest in developing spin-offs and TV series, there is a possibility that Brosnan could return for a special one-off project as an older Bond.
Who Will Be the Next James Bond?
Amazon may break away from traditional casting strategies when selecting the next 007. Historically, new Bond actors have been relatively lesser-known before taking on the role. Daniel Craig, for example, had gained some recognition for films like Layer Cake (2004) and Road to Perdition (2002) but was far from a household name. Similarly, Brosnan was known for roles in Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) and various TV movies before becoming Bond in GoldenEye.
As the Bond franchise prepares for its next era, it remains to be seen whether Brosnan’s chapter is truly closed or if he will have one last mission left in him.
