On September 22, a distressing case of neglect and abuse involving an elderly dog was brought to the attention of the Global Welfare Association for Rescuing and Protecting Animals (GWARP). This particular incident stood out as one of the most heart-wrenching cases they had encountered.
The emaciated and frail dog was discovered in a deplorable state, chained and deprived of sustenance and hydration. The animal was visibly suffering from bone cancer, a condition that had been left untreated for an extended period. The type of cancer, osteosarcoma, is known for its cruelty and was likely exacerbated by the dog’s harsh living conditions and meager diet composed of scraps and refuse.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the decision was made to transfer the dog, named Jordan, to a veterinarian for comprehensive medical attention, including blood tests and the necessary amputation. Histology testing of tissue samples was conducted to inform the treatment plan. Despite progress, a GWARP team member acknowledged that there remained a challenging road ahead.
Remarkably, X-rays revealed a glimmer of hope—Jordan’s osteosarcoma, an aggressively spreading tumor, had not yet metastasized to his lungs. Unfortunately, as the tumor grew, it caused further distress by tearing the skin.
Jordan’s journey towards recovery began with a therapeutic bath aimed at cleansing him from the traumas of his past. However, due to the inadequacy of available treatments in Azerbaijan, it was determined that he would receive the care he desperately needed in Turkey. Plans were swiftly made to transport him to the better-equipped facilities in Istanbul.
Following his arrival in Istanbul, Jordan underwent pre-surgery sedation to facilitate thorough X-rays of his body. The subsequent amputation of the cancerous limb marked the beginning of his path to healing.
Just three days after the surgery, Jordan’s resilience was already evident. He was adapting well to his altered circumstances, displaying a swift ability to learn and an enthusiastic appetite for the nourishing meals provided by his caregivers.
As Jordan embarks on his journey of recovery, an outpouring of well-wishes and support from those moved by his story continues to uplift him. The strength he has shown in the face of adversity serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the transformative power of compassion and care.
