Uninvited Guest: Alligator Breaks into Sleeping Couple’s Home

A seemingly routine night took an astonishing turn for a couple in New Iberia, Louisiana, when an unexpected and unsettling intruder entered their home. Don Schultz and his partner Jan were jolted awake by the frenzied barking of their dog, Panda. The noise suggested to them that a possible break-in was underway.

Reacting swiftly, Don leaped out of bed, clad only in his underwear, and grabbed a gun to investigate the source of the disturbance. Anticipating a possible burglar, he courageously ventured into the hallway to confront the intruder. However, his startling discovery was far from what he expected.

The commotion was not caused by a human intruder; instead, it was a five-foot-long alligator that had managed to make its way into their home through a doggy door. The unsuspecting couple’s dog flap had unwittingly served as an entry point for the reptile.

The situation escalated as Don realized the presence of the alligator just a foot away from his position. Startled, he retreated and quickly apprised Jan of the unexpected guest. Sharing a photograph with her to prove his assertion, he promptly contacted the local Sheriff’s Office for assistance.

The authorities summoned the Fish and Wildlife Department to handle the situation. The alligator was eventually captured and secured by the wildlife experts. It was revealed that the alligator had likely been attracted to the home by the cool air seeping out around the doggy door, providing a respite from the intense heat Louisiana had experienced in recent weeks.

Reflecting on the peculiar incident, Don Schultz recounted the unexpected turn of events. He described how the alligator had followed the cool breeze from the air conditioning unit, which led it to the far end of the hallway where it rested below the cold air return.

While the event might have left the couple in awe of nature’s unpredictable surprises, it certainly highlighted the importance of ensuring home security against even the most unconventional intruders.
