Good Samaritan Saves Stranger’s Dog from Frigid Waters

Buffalo Resident’s Quick Thinking and Courageous Action Save the Day

Buffalo, New York – In a heartwarming display of bravery and compassion, Don Chatten, a devoted dog-lover residing in Buffalo, New York, recently demonstrated remarkable heroism by rescuing a stranded terrier from icy waters. Don’s two rescue dogs, Duke and Milo, played a pivotal role in this heart-touching incident.

Don’s routine visit to the Bark Park at Ellicott Creek Park turned into a heroic act on Valentine’s Day 2019. After spending quality time with Duke and Milo off-leash, Don was about to leave when an anxious man approached him, desperately seeking help to find his lost terrier, Jackson. Without hesitation, Don agreed to assist and, along with the concerned owner, began scouring the area.

The search took them to a pedestrian bridge spanning Tonawanda Creek, where Don’s loyal companions, Duke and Milo, alerted him by stopping and whining. Upon closer inspection, Don spotted Jackson struggling to stay afloat in the icy water below. Nearby, Mary Balicki and Samantha Kelly were also observing the situation.

Realizing that time was of the essence and the terrier’s life was in jeopardy, Don took immediate action. He entrusted his belongings to Mary, then bravely plunged into the frigid waters. Having grown up in the area, Don was familiar with the terrain and knew where the water was shallow enough for a safe rescue.

Describing the tense moment, Don shared, “I kind of crawled up on the ice… The ice gave away… At that point, I was up to my waist in water, but I knew it was shallow because I knew that park… I knew it was shallow, so I just kind of broke the ice and pulled the dog out.”

Thanks to Don’s courage and quick thinking, he successfully reached the struggling terrier and brought him back to dry land. Although Don faced difficulties while returning, he managed to overcome them and reach safety with Jackson in his arms. Mary and Samantha were deeply moved by Don’s selfless act, with Mary expressing her awe, “Not many people would jump in for someone else’s dog. He just saw a situation, and he just handled it.”

Don reunited Jackson with his relieved owner, who promptly rushed the damp terrier to the vet. Miraculously, Jackson emerged unharmed from the ordeal. Samantha shared the incredible rescue photos on social media, and Don’s story of valor quickly spread, earning him the title of a hero. However, the humble hero attributed his success to his loyal canine companions, Duke and Milo, who had spotted Jackson’s plight.

In the end, Don emphasized, “I just did the grunt work.” This heartwarming tale showcases the remarkable bond between humans and their furry companions, reminding us that heroes can come in all forms – even those with wagging tails and wet noses.
