Miraculous Turn of Events: Unknowingly Pregnant Mum Welcomes Triplets During Lockdown
In an astonishing turn of events in the Midlands, a young mum who had no idea she was pregnant ended up giving birth to triplets through an emergency Caesarean section during lockdown. Bethany Smith, a 26-year-old from Burton, Staffordshire, welcomed two girls, Kiren and Kirit, and a boy named Arjan, at 31 weeks on April 4.
Already a mother of three older children, Bethany was taken aback when she discovered her pregnancy, despite using contraception in the form of a coil. The shock intensified when doctors revealed it wasn’t just one baby but three. Neither Bethany nor her partner had a history of multiple births in their families, making it even more surprising.
The circumstances of giving birth during lockdown were surreal, dampening the joy of bringing new life into the world. Due to the ongoing pandemic, Bethany couldn’t see her baby girls for two days as they required assistance with their breathing. Only one parent was allowed to visit per day, and they had to wear protective gear such as masks, gowns, and gloves.
Recounting the experience, Bethany expressed how it was far from the typical excitement of becoming new parents. The labor itself went well, and the medical team promptly performed the Caesarean section, as it was deemed safer than a natural delivery. A previous scare occurred at 26 weeks when Bethany went into premature labor. However, doctors skillfully managed to halt the process, preventing the triplets from being born too early.
Bethany shared her mixed emotions during the hospital stay, “It was very surreal and not how you’d imagine. All the excitement of having a baby was taken away because of Covid-19. We couldn’t do what normal parents would.”
Fortunately, after spending three weeks in the hospital, the triplets were allowed to go home. Bethany and her partner are relieved that all three babies are doing well.
Given that neither of their families had a history of multiples, the couple’s journey to becoming parents to three adorable babies remains a heartwarming and miraculous surprise.
