Photographer Captures Incredible Image of Two Eagles Locking Talons in Mid-Air

Photographer Rajiv Mongia, based in Portland, recently captured an extraordinary image of two eagles engaging in a captivating mid-air display. This shot, which required years of patient waiting, showcases the eagles’ talons locked together as they soar through the sky. One of the birds is seen flying upright, while the other appears to be inverted and upside down. It is as if the second eagle is being supported by the first, preventing it from falling to the ground.

Mongia’s journey into wildlife photography began in 2017, inspired by a visit to Patagonia. Intrigued by the challenge of capturing unique moments and behaviors of animals, he embarked on a path that demanded meticulous planning, technical expertise, and a fair share of luck. The COVID-19 pandemic further fueled Mongia’s dedication to photography, as it provided an opportunity to escape the confines of home and immerse himself in the natural world.

Among the various subjects Mongia sought to photograph, the behavior of raptors like bald eagles held particular fascination. He marveled at the resurgence of these magnificent birds in the Pacific Northwest and was determined to capture their interactions with one another. While he had successfully photographed eagles perched or snatching prey, he had yet to witness their captivating mid-air interactions. Mongia had seen images by other photographers featuring eagles with locked talons, but he remained uncertain about when and where he would have the chance to capture such a shot.

Finally, Mongia’s opportunity arrived when he attended a photography class led by the renowned photographer Mark Smith. Smith’s expertise, coupled with his insights into recent eagle behavior, proved invaluable. Equipped with this knowledge, Mongia embarked on a four-hour photography session, surrounded by a flurry of activity. Dozens of eagles, along with great blue herons, crows, and gulls, filled the skies, all vying to catch fish. The scene was a whirlwind of action, leaving little time for analysis or contemplation.

On that eventful day, Mongia managed to capture over 5,000 photographs, uncertain of what he had achieved. It was only later, when he reviewed his images, that he stumbled upon the magical shot he had been longing for. The eagles, talons entwined, showcased a perfect moment of connection and intensity. Despite being slightly distant in the frame, the image exuded a sense of movement, with one eagle caught in a cry and the other fixated on its companion.

This photograph was a culmination of Mongia’s passion for bird photography, but it certainly won’t be his last endeavor. Inspired by this achievement and his unwavering dedication, he will continue to explore the wonders of nature through his lens, seeking out unique moments that capture the essence of wildlife in all its glory.
