Melbourne mother’s horror after baby received horrific injuries at city childcare centre

A 10-week-old baby had to be taken to hospital after being badly scratched by another child at a Melbourne childcare centre.

His mother Rachel* said she was called to Only About Children Melbourne Central last month when staff said there was an incident involving her son during a routine nappy change.

When the mother and her partner arrived, she saw her 10-week-old son, Noah, with more than a dozen bright red scratches across his face.

“We were both in tears. We couldn’t believe such a horrible thing could happen to our boy,”

The family took Noah to Box Hill Hospital where doctors examined and cleaned his wounds.

Rachel claims doctors were in disbelief that the baby was so severely scratched, and medics checked the infant to ensure his eyes and brain had not been injured.

“I feel lots of pain in my heart. I don’t even want to click the images (of Noah injured),” Rachel said.

Only About Children Melbourne Central declined 7NEWS’ request for comment but apologised in a letter to the family.

The Victorian Department of Education said it was aware of the incident, and said the centre had changed its policies as a result.

“The service has put in place measures to address this incident, including reviewing its procedures at nappy change times to include an additional educator at these times,” a spokesperson said.

“The department takes the safety, security and well-being of every child extremely seriously.”

Rachel said the family are traumatised and have not sent their son back to childcare.

“We just can’t accept this explanation because there were more than 20 scratches on Noah’s face. How could this happen accidentally?” Rachel said.
