Unusual accident: Turtle crashes through car window and nearly decapitates passenger

This extraordinary incident unfolded for Latonya Lark and her brother Kevin Grant on a seemingly ordinary day in Savannah, Georgia.

On May 12, while running errands, Latonya and Kevin were traveling north on the Harry S Truman Parkway when a startling event unfolded. Out of nowhere, a turtle forcefully crashed through their car window, creating a shocking and potentially dangerous situation.

Initially mistaking the turtle for a brick hurtling towards them, Latonya exclaimed to her brother, “My God, there’s a brick!” Recounting the incident to WSAV-TV, she described the loud boom and the shattering of glass that followed, causing them to instinctively shield themselves from harm.

Given the limited time they had to react, there was little they could do. Their immediate response was to turn and cover, hoping to minimize the potential damage. It was a moment of sheer survival instinct.

Latonya speculates that the turtle was likely struck by another passing vehicle in front of them, causing the creature to be flung backward and directly into their windshield. The force of the impact, fortunately, only managed to pierce the glass, sparing them from more severe injuries.

Immediately after the incident, Latonya and Kevin pulled over and contacted the authorities for assistance. Due to the extensive damage caused by the turtle’s unexpected flight, service vehicles were required to tow their car away.

Reflecting on the incident, Latonya later explained that even the police officer present at the scene acknowledged the potential catastrophe that was narrowly avoided. The thickness of the glass and her quick reaction in slowing down played pivotal roles in averting disaster.

As emergency personnel worked to remove the turtle from the shattered windshield, they discovered that the resilient creature had survived. However, it had tragically lost one of its legs, and its chances of survival were uncertain. Latonya reached out a few days later to check on the turtle’s condition but received the heart-wrenching news that it had succumbed to significant blood loss.

In light of this extraordinary event, Latonya hopes to raise awareness about the importance of remaining vigilant and attentive while driving, especially at higher speeds. She emphasized that drivers must stay focused on the road at all times.
