An Experienced Storm Chaser Captures Incredible Images of Atmospheric Optics on an Icy Mountain Top.
In the enchanting Sauerland region of Germany, during a frosty winter, an intrepid storm chaser captured what he described as the most stunning winter pictures he had ever taken. Wouter van Bernebeek, hailing from the Netherlands, shared these breathtaking images on Facebook on December 11, 2022. The photographs depicted an icy winter wonderland, showcasing a diverse range of atmospheric optical phenomena.
Among the captivating displays were a 46-degree halo, a 22-degree halo accompanied by parhelia (also known as sun dogs), and an upper tangent arc. These mesmerizing optical phenomena are formed through the intricate interplay of ice crystals within the atmosphere. On that particular day, temperatures plummeted to an astonishing range of 5 to 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 to -15 degrees Celsius). Van Bernebeek confirmed the presence of frozen fog clinging to trees and ethereal ice needles, also known as “diamond dust,” suspended in the air when the photograph was taken. He further shared additional awe-inspiring photos and videos from that day on his YouTube channel.
Sauerland, although sparsely populated, is a sprawling tourist destination in Germany. It offers over 19,000 miles (30,000 km) of hiking trails and a multitude of resorts that attract visitors throughout the year.
