A long-range robotic submarine continuously scans the ocean for scientific research and exploration purposes.

The recently unveiled REMUS 620 medium-class naval Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) by HII appears like a fat torpedo, but it is more sophisticated than it looks. This autonomous robotic submarine utilizes artificial intelligence and has an operational range of 275 nautical miles (316 miles or 509 kilometers).

Compared to the past, underwater drones have become more advanced and can do more than just provide visual information remotely. In the future, conventional warships could be overseen by command centers with submersible drones performing the majority of the work. The REMUS 620, which is based on HII’s REMUS 300 UUV, is designed to support both current and predicted US Navy and special forces operations. Its battery system has a life of 110 hours, providing the UUV with longer mission times and enough range to travel to and from its operational sites. The REMUS 620 can perform various tasks, including mine countermeasures, hydrographic surveys, intelligence operations, surveillance, and electronic warfare.

The REMUS 620 has a modular open architecture and includes HII’s Odyssey autonomy suite, which provides the drone with artificial intelligence, autonomous health monitoring, and sensor fusion and perception. It can also collaborate with other robotic vehicles. The batteries are easily swappable, allowing for quick turnaround times, and the standard synthetic aperture sonar unit can be replaced or augmented to meet mission requirements.

The REMUS 620 can be launched from submarines, small crewed or uncrewed boats, amphibious ships, surface warships, and helicopters. It can also deploy robotic crafts and payloads while underwater. According to Duane Fotheгingham, president of HII’s Mission Technologies’ Unmanned Systems business group, the REMUS 620 is the first medium UUV designed to deliver advanced above-and-below water effects accurately at long range, which is crucial for retaining a forward strategic advantage.
