Truck Driver Killed in Fiery Interstate Crash; Loyal Dog Survives and Finds Her Way Back to Family
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A devastating highway crash that claimed the life of an Iowa truck driver has left behind a story of heartbreak, resilience, and an extraordinary reunion.
On June 23, Jeffrey Simmons, a 63-year-old truck driver from Iowa, was traveling westbound on Interstate 64 near Exit 54 in South Charleston, West Virginia, when his tractor-trailer crashed. According to local authorities, the truck’s cab came to rest hanging over the edge of a bridge as flames and thick black smoke engulfed the front of the vehicle.
Despite the rapid response from emergency crews, Simmons did not survive the crash.
His faithful companion, however, somehow did.
A Remarkable Rescue
Inside the wreckage was Hennessy, Simmons’ dog, who miraculously survived the fiery accident without suffering serious injuries.
Firefighters were able to safely rescue the frightened dog from the damaged truck before transporting her to the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, where veterinarians and shelter staff immediately began caring for her.

By the following morning, Hennessy was able to see her family through a FaceTime video call.
