Truck Driver Killed in Fiery Interstate Crash; Loyal Dog Survives and Finds Her Way Back to Family

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A devastating highway crash that claimed the life of an Iowa truck driver has left behind a story of heartbreak, resilience, and an extraordinary reunion.
On June 23, Jeffrey Simmons, a 63-year-old truck driver from Iowa, was traveling westbound on Interstate 64 near Exit 54 in South Charleston, West Virginia, when his tractor-trailer crashed. According to local authorities, the truck’s cab came to rest hanging over the edge of a bridge as flames and thick black smoke engulfed the front of the vehicle.
Despite the rapid response from emergency crews, Simmons did not survive the crash.
His faithful companion, however, somehow did.

A Remarkable Rescue
Inside the wreckage was Hennessy, Simmons’ dog, who miraculously survived the fiery accident without suffering serious injuries.
Firefighters were able to safely rescue the frightened dog from the damaged truck before transporting her to the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, where veterinarians and shelter staff immediately began caring for her.
While Hennessy appeared physically unharmed, staff knew she had experienced a traumatic loss.
“She had just lost the person she had been traveling with,” one shelter volunteer said. “Our first priority was making sure she felt safe.”

Following the Clues
With little information available, shelter staff turned to the identification on Hennessy’s collar in hopes of locating her family.
The information led them to an Iowa area code, which eventually connected them with the Animal Rescue League of Marshalltown. Working together, both organizations were able to identify and contact Jeffrey Simmons’ surviving relatives.
By the following morning, Hennessy was able to see her family through a FaceTime video call.
Shelter staff described the moment as deeply emotional.
As familiar voices filled the room, Hennessy’s demeanor changed almost immediately. Her tail wagged, her ears perked up, and she appeared noticeably calmer after hearing the people she knew.
For everyone watching, it was a powerful reminder that animals grieve—and recognize the voices of those they love.
Bringing Hennessy Home
Jeffrey Simmons’ family has since begun making arrangements to travel from Iowa to West Virginia to bring Hennessy home.
Although the journey back will take hundreds of miles, it will ensure that the loyal dog is reunited with the family who still cares for her.
After surviving one of the darkest days imaginable, Hennessy will not have to face the future alone.
A Story of Loss—and Compassion
The crash has left a family mourning the loss of a loved one, while also highlighting the compassion shown by first responders, shelter workers, and rescue organizations that worked together to protect one small life during an unimaginable tragedy.
Emergency crews risked their own safety to rescue Hennessy from the burning wreckage. Humane society staff cared for her while searching for her family. Rescue organizations coordinated across state lines to ensure she would not become another victim of the accident.
Their combined efforts transformed what began as a heartbreaking tragedy into a story of hope.
More Than a Survivor
Dogs often form profound bonds with the people they travel through life with, and experts say they can experience grief following the loss of a companion.
For Hennessy, losing Jeffrey Simmons meant losing the person who had been beside her on the road every day.
Yet because strangers chose to help rather than look away, she did not lose everything.
Soon, Hennessy will leave West Virginia behind and return to Iowa—not with the person she arrived with, but with the family still waiting to welcome her home.
In the midst of smoke, sirens, and unimaginable loss, one loyal dog survived.
And thanks to the kindness of many people, she also found her way back to where she belongs.
